Falling off the proverbial wagon and getting back into the literal saddle
So...after my shin injury a few months ago my workout regimen has been sporadic at best. I haven't been on any special training plan and have been fitting in workouts as best I can in a hodge podge manner. Then I finally decided that the only way for me to stick with my workouts is to have something to train for, both short term and long term. Also, exercise is a critical part of controlling my mood and wellbeing. My mental health thrives on a daily dose of not only pharmaceuticals but also endorphins and adrenaline from exercise. So I am "Back in the saddle again"
Next small event, Patriot Day Triathlon in Rio Rancho over labor day weekend, and next big event Ironman 70.3 (half ironman) in Oceanside, CA on March 31, 2012...all this in preparation to get me to Ironman in Couer D'Alene Idaho in June 2013.
So I got a Kindle for my birthday thanks to my amazing parents and I found a great book that I have been reading called "Be Ironfit". Its a great read and is a book on getting yourself prepared for an ironman. Fitting of course. This is the first time I actually ever sat down and read a book from cover to cover on training for anything, but an event of this magnitude needs a game plan. Not only for race day, but for the road to race day.
I have always been good at getting plans started, lining things out, getting fancy charts and graphs going and start out charged and gun ho the first 2-3 weeks only to start falling off my training plan a little here and a little there until I am off it completely and ultimately suffer in my performance. My challenge to myself for this half-ironman training set is going to be to stick with the program from start to finish. One, its important because I don't want to injure myself by training correctly, and two I think it will make a bit change in me overall to be able to develop a plan, stick with it and follow through to the end which is where I have the most difficulty.
My incredible husband and parents are of course as supportive as ever in my upcoming endeavor. I am sure they all think I am a little bit off my rocker, but they love me for the somewhat "off" person I am and have always supported me in going for my dreams. So today I get back into the bike saddle and will be trying out some bike trainers...after getting rid of my gym membership the best time for me to get my bike workouts is going to be in the early mornings before work and I would prefer not to ride out in the dark by myself so a bike trainer seems like the best option. Fortunately for me my stepdad is a bit of a cycle fanatic and has 2 for me to try out to see what I like before trying to find a good deal on one for myself. Look out for a blog post on bike trainers ;-)
